Here is the Smiley version of the Tam Tam stool, low-cost designer furniture that makes an impression in any room of the house - at least two good reasons not to ignore the Seventies revival currently sweeping through interior design as well as the fashion world. And because everything is a matter of taste, the Tam Tam stool is stackable and can be taken apart, or changed to suit your mood and the decor in your home.
The Tam Tam stool was designed by Henry Massonnet in 1968, a time when plastic was releasing the design world from the shackles of technical limitation, winning over leading designers in the process. It was a material that lent itself perfectly to all manner of moulding techniques and could be made into unusual shapes on high-speed production lines with practically no wastage.
In 1973, the oil crisis seriously hindered the creation of plastic furniture. One of the few survivors was a little stool that was comfortable, easy to carry, environmentally-friendly, economical and snapped together in seconds.
The public was enthusiastic and the Tam Tam stool took off, with sales reaching over 12 million. All that was needed was a photo of Brigitte Bardot seated on a Tam Tam to elevate the stool to the much-coveted status of cult item.
Today, the Tam Tam is made in the same factory using the same no. 169 mould that gave rise to the original version. It is produced by STAMP, a company started by Henry Massonnet himself. A wholly French product, the new-generation Tam Tam is a justly-proud descendant of the Tam Tam line.
